Mission Statement
Our organization is made up of friends and neighbors from Northern Virginia. Quander Brook is a small, spring fed watershed
that meanders through the Spring Bank neighborhood of the Mount Vernon District of Fairfax County. In 2005, the stream is
suffering from years of neglect due to either non-existant or poor storm water management techniques that have seriously impacted
on the overall health and function of this once viable and clean brook. The headwaters of Quander Brook begin as a series
of 3 spring fed streams that originate in 3 areas of the Spring Bank neighborhood. The individual streams join and become
one at the north end of the neighborhood before flowing under Quander Road. From there Quander Brook flows on the east side
of Richmond Highway and meanders through Belle Haven parklands before crossing under Huntington Avenue and Fort Hunt Road
and emptying into Hunting Creek south of Old Town Alexandria, VA. Quander Brook is part of the Belle Haven watershed which
in turn is part of the Potomac River watershed a sub-watershed to the six state Chesapeake Bay watershed. It is our mission
to restore the stream to the pristine condition that once attracted Native Peoples to camp along its banks, farmers to draw
its waters to grow crops and Union soldiers to quench their thirsts from nearby fortifications. By accomplishing this mission
Quander Brook will once again provide the ecological services of all sub-watersheds to filter, cool and cleanse the waters
passing on to the next watershed and to provide habitat and sustenance to wildlife as well as recreation to members of the
human community.
